14. Meeting of the German Dual Career Network

IMG_5000German Network was guest at the University of Göttingen

Highly qualified and ambitious people usually live together with equally qualified and ambitious partners, for whom their career and prospects are also important. Moving to Göttingen from other countries or regions of Germany following a job offer is only possible, even thinkable, if the partner can find the same opportunities for career development.

Dual Career Offers favor couples living together and therefore promotes balance between family and career. The Welcome Centre at the University offers assistance in this area for the new coming Professors since the end of 2008, giving them a jump-start in the global competition and the possibility to sharpen their research profile.

College Dual Career Services, academic and nonacademic research facilities and regional Networks have joined forces in the German Dual Career Network to improve their research profile, the interchange of experiences, and the (inter)national visibility of such supporting programs for couples in Germany. In the meanwhile, the Network has 43 members.

Under the Motto, “Cooperation before Competition”, around 30 Dual Career experts met at the end of January to interchange experiences and good practice. The Network engaged, among other issues, in how to acquire a better interconnectedness through the internet. Other issues at the conference on the 26 and 27, January were: how useful can “Volunteering” be for career development and what can professional personnel consultancy provide, what possibilities are there for international networking, and how can I improve my competence as a consultant in career advising and skill-profile development. The general program also offered a guided visit to the Aula and the “Karzer” (the University´s old detention room).
