U4 Staff Mobililty Göttingen-Groningen: Workshop Intercultural Competence

Groningen_mittel_IMG_0347-600x800xFrom January 16 to January 20, 2017, the Winter School on Intercultural Competence took place at the U4 partner university Groningen. Dr. Janet Bennet, director of the Intercultural Communication Institute (Portland, Oregon) joined the event, as well as Alexandra Schreiber (director of the Center for Intercultural Competence at the Department for Intercultural German Studies, Göttingen).

This week-long workshop was coordinated by Michaela Carrière (Centre for Language and Culture, Groningen University). Its core theme was the conceptualisation of intercultutal trainings, with a focus on the implementation of different learning types. The structured exchange of ideas about training methods and good practice examples offered many opportunities for analysis and exchange: Participants from science and the world of business took part in the program.

The interactive workshop format made it possible to reflect and engage with a multiplicity of perspectives on intercultural competences, coming from various backgrounds. The open exchange provided a basis for sustainable networking opportunities within the U4 network.

Alexandra Schreiber is responsible for the conceptualisation and realisation of intercultural trainings for students at the University of Göttingen. The current course program (summer term 2017) includes a variety of workshops in German and English, dealing with general and culture-specific topics. All of these courses are open for outgoing and incoming students, returnees from abroad, and students who are participating in the InDigU program. The courses are complemented by individually furnished workshops-on-demand, catering to the needs of Göttingen International, the faculties and student initiatives at the University of Göttingen.
