Threatened researchers receive grants in the Philipp Schwartz Initiative

Success in the latest award round of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative: Three of a total of 29 scholarships for threatened scientists across Germany go to the University of Göttingen. This means that the university has been able to attract a total of eight grants since the program began in 2016. With the Philipp Schwartz Initiative of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, universities and research institutions in Germany are given the opportunity to accept endangered scientists for 24 months on a full scholarship.

„Researchers worldwide form a community that comes together in the name of science across the borders of countries, languages and cultures,“ said Prof. Dr. Hiltraud Casper-Hehne, Vice President for International Affairs at the University of Göttingen. „Securing and preserving this community and its underlying values begins with protecting those who are persecuted or at risk of persecution in their home countries.“

The Philipp Schwartz Initiative supports scientists who are looking for protection in Germany because war or persecution are imminent in their home countries. It was launched in 2016 by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Federal Foreign Office, which award up to 50 scholarships each year. In addition to the integration concept, the scientific opportunities and the qualifications of the researchers, the prospects for a successful new start in Germany are decisive for the awarding of scholarships.
