Featured Programme: World Literature (B.A.) – Faculty of Humanities

Is literature your passion? Do you want to pursue a professional career in it, but you do not want to  limit yourself to  just a single nation’s literature? Would you much rather look at the global phenomenon of literature?

Then a B.A. in World Literature seems just right for you.  The B.A. in World Literature is a single bachelor programme that covers a wide spectrum of literature…

from old-Icelandic epics to the Chinese novella,

from Greek tragedies to Russian avant-garde,

from texts in cuneiform inscription to postmodern hypertexts,

from parchment to the globalized book market.

The bachelor programme in World Literature is a joint effort of the philological faculties of the University of Göttingen. Students will learn basic knowledge about the world of literature. They will learn to look at literature as a global phenomenon and thus be best prepared for a book market that has long been globalized. Students will learn a wide array of literary methods, both scientific and editorial, which will be vital for working in the literary field. The skills students learn will qualify them to pursue careers as writers, literary agents, publishers, editors, translators and managers of literary exhibitions or festivals.

The students can also gain first-hand experience of a foreign country if they sign up for one of the three double-degree programmes. To this end, the University of Göttingen has partnered with East China Normal University in Shanghai, University of Arizona and Voronezh State University in Voronezh, Russia. There, students will have the ability to spend the last two semesters of their bachelor programme at their designated university and will ultimately earn two bachelor degrees.
