Master’s Degree Programme “Imported and Endemic Animal and Zoonotic Diseases”

The master’s degree “Imported and Endemic Animal and Zoonotic Diseases” is a two-year tri-national programme organized by the University of Göttingen, the Cairo University in Egypt, and the University of Khartoum in Sudan. The programme is funded by the DAAD. The kick-off meeting took place in July 2018 in Göttingen, and this year from 10 to 13 January, the organizing partners met for the first annual meeting in Göttingen.

The emergence of several infectious diseases during the last decades raises many questions on the readiness of the scientific community. Imported infectious diseases include also newly identified pathogens, novel variants of known pathogens or re-emergence of known pathogens in new areas. Nowadays, the ease of travelling, global warming and changes in the environment accelerate the spread of such diseases. The degree programme aims to increase the preparedness and implementation of novel technologies for identification and control of imported and endemic diseases as well as bringing early-career scientists and specialists together in solving common problems.

The master’s programme shall target students graduating from faculties of Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Natural Sciences and Mathematics in order to allow a multidisciplinary approach of the problem. Moreover, in each of the master’s projects, at least one student from each partner country will be involved to allow for transboundary exchange of ideas and to work in an international team. Administration staff and university lecturers from the three partner universities will be engaged in the organization and conducting of various modules in the master’s programme, which will strengthen their experiences working in an international atmosphere. Students can start the programme at either UGOE, CU or UoK and continue their study at another partner institution.
