Technology Transfer Workshop on the Introduction of Mobile Suitcase Laboratories in Sri Lanka

Leishmania donovani is a protozoal disease causing a form of skin lesion in Sri Lanka. The detection of infected cases remains a big challenge for the local scientific community.

In collaboration with medical faculties at University of Sri Jayewardenepura and University of Kelaniya, a workshop was conduced in Sri Lanka between March 22 – March 28, 2017. The workshop was funded by the Sri Lankan foundation of science. The aim of the workshop was to introduce the mobile suitcase laboratory for the rapid detection of Leishmania donovani, which was developed by the University of Göttingen and the German Primate Center. Sixteen scientists and technician joined the workshop, which was divided into two parts: practical training at the central laboratory in Colombo, and a field-testing in Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi. This in situ test is expected to be implemented in Sri Lanka in order to control a possible future disease outbreak.
