DAAD funded German Alumni Conference on “Sustainable Forest Management: Contribution to Climate Change Mitigation”, 9 December 2021

The University of Göttingen organized an online German Alumni Conference on “Sustainable Forest Management: Contribution to Climate Change Mitigation” on Thursday, 9 December 2021. The event was part of the DAAD-funded alumni project for two years, coordinated by Göttingen International. The event was supposed to be held at the Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal for the South Asian German alumni, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was organized in hybrid format. More than 200 German alumni from 22 countries registered for the event and 115 took part in the conference. There were 25 German alumni in Kathmandu, Nepal who participated in presence in Kathmandu.

The conference covered major topics of Sustainable Forest Management and Climate Change/REDD+, featuring experts from the University of Göttingen; UNFCC, Bonn; CIFOR, Indonesia; IPB University, Indonesia; Tribhuvan University, Nepal; Advanced Institute of Wildlife Conservation, Chennai, India; and CATIE, Costa Rica to share diverse perspectives on the latest research in forest monitoring, agroforestry, and climate change. The target audience was a diverse group of alumni, current students, and researchers of German universities from around the world.

Dr. Uwe Muuss, Director of Göttingen International, welcomed the participants and Dr. Katja Lasch, Director of the DAAD Regional Office, India and Director of the German Center for Research and Innovation (DWIH), gave the inaugural speech followed by a keynote speech from Professor Dr. Christoph Kleinn, Head of Forest Inventory and Remote Sensing, Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology. At the end of the conference, there was a special lecture by – Dr. Eduardo Jose Somarriba from CATIE, Costa Rica, on “Agroforestry with Coffee and Cocoa: Optimal Shade Canopy Design to Cope with Climate Change”.

Next year, the German Alumni conference will take place in Bangalore at the University of Agricultural Sciences Bangalore (UASB). We plan to organize this event in hybrid format.
