On September 9th and 10th in 2021, the 8th HeKKSaGOn Presidents‘ Conference (second conference of the second cycle, virtual for the first time) took place under the leadership of the University of Tohoku (and on the occasion of the 160th anniversary of German – Japanese relations under the patronage of the German Ambassador in Tokyo, Dr. Klaus Vietze). The conference addressed the question „How universities can contribute to building healthy, safe and resilient societies“ and was attended by speakers and panellists as well as about 120 other people. The public part of the conference was introduced by Professor Fumihiko Imamura (Director, International Research Institute of Disaster Science, Tohoku University) with a keynote speech on „Building resilient societies following the Great East Japan Earthquake and COVID-19 Pandemic“.

The program included:

  • Reports from the eight HeKKSaGOn working groups,
  • a virtual poster session for early career researchers, in which 14 scientists presented their work to about 80 people (participants from Göttingen: Tomas Kulvicius [WG 4], Department for Computational Neuroscience, „Using Robotics and Machine Learning Methods for Improved Diagnostics of Movement Disorders in Adults and Young Children“, and Benjamin Eltzner [WG 6], Institute for Mathematical Stochastics, „Data Space Geometry Leading to Smeary Asymptotic Rates“) and
  • a students‘ workshop with three working groups (15 students in total, 2 of them from Göttingen).

At the end of the conference, a joint statement was adopted.
