Global Learning – Opportunities for Students, Lecturers, Scientists and Scholars | Experiences from the liveSciences³ Project
Rethinking international teaching and learning as well as creating space for global learning is one of the main goals of the liveSciences³ project*. liveSciences³ is funded by the DAAD as a part of the ‘International Mobility and Cooperation through Digitalisation’ (IMKD) programme and aims to enrich the international journey of students with transnational and digital-supported learning opportunities.
As one of many project activities, the online International Lecture Series on ‘Local Solutions for Global Challenges’ was initiated during the 2021 summer semester. International scientists from all liveSciences³ partner universities and different disciplines (forestry, biology and agricultural sciences) contributed and presented current research results as well as different perspectives on the biodiversity crisis and the effects of climate change. Starting with winegrowing in Chile, to the rainforest in Costa Rica, to the north sea’s salt marsh – all these (and more) complex connected systems were introduced to understand, for example, the decline in species, or the influence of land use on climate change. Every week about 100 students and scientists from Göttingen and the liveSciences³ partner universities discussed possible local solutions for global challenges and networked across institutions and disciplines.
Besides the offers for students, a further event series especially for lecturers started during the 2021 summer semester. With the motto ‘Digital Teaching and Learning: Perspectives for Life Sciences’ the virtual ‘Experience Kaleidoscope’ gave lecturers the opportunity to reflect and discuss digital and online teaching and learning with international colleagues. Lecturers shared their experiences from the past online semesters and on different innovative teaching and learning methods. Joint classroom scenarios in cooperation with international partners as well as the design and implementation of practice-oriented courses in times of a pandemic, such as the use of paper microscopes within DIY-excursions, were debated.
Due to the positive feedback from students and lecturers, we are highly pleased, that both the International Lecture Series and the Experience Kaleidoscope will continue in the following winter semester.
