Erasmus+ KA 107 – My Experience in Göttingen

A testimonial by Freestina Andarwening (IPB University, Indonesia)

Since 2015 the University of Göttingen successfully participates in the European Erasmus+ Key Action 107 (KA 107) programme which offers the possibility of an international exchange for students (credit mobility) and staff with partner countries outside of Europe. The Erasmus+ KA 107 is based on strategic partnerships and only higher education institutions from Europe can apply for this funding scheme. Göttingen International coordinates the application and implementation of this international mobility scheme in order to support the cooperation of the different faculties of the University of Göttingen.

One of the few student mobilities which could take place during the pandemic, was the incoming student mobility of  Ms. Freestina Andarwening, a Master student from the Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB University, Indonesia), who was hosted by the Faculty of Forestry here in Göttingen.

We are glad to share her experience:

Looking back at my times as an exchange student at Göttingen University, I couldn’t be more grateful for this great opportunity to learn in such a multicultural and stimulating environment. At first I was hesitant to apply. I was scared that the process will be complicated and difficult, especially in this pandemic situation. And I wonder how the class will run?! But everything went well.

I really enjoyed the variety of courses offered and that I could specialize in the subjects that interested me the most. Compared to my home university, the class atmosphere was lively and the interaction with both fellow students and teaching staff was much more common. I like the way the lecturer taught us and delivered the knowledge. Even in the pandemic situation, everything was good, I still can go on practicum in Laboratory, of course with the strict protocol, and some classes was held online.

Before coming to Germany, I’m as a moslem, a minority and I was feeling a little bit uneasy, but surprisingly I didn’t feel any bad vibe and discrimination. On the road, on the public transportation wherever I go, at the dorm, the people are very welcoming.

During my time on exchange, I travelled to neighbor cities like Hamburg, Kassel and Bremen. Bremen is an amazing place with a lot of old building. I have learnt incredibly much inside and outside the classroom and met wonderful people.

I’d like to write a lot about how wonderful and beautiful experience I received during my stay in Germany, but it need pages. All I can do is encourage everyone to go on exchange, get involved and find a home away from home as I did. Finally I’d like to thank everyone who has made my time at Göttingen University so special – from my fellow students, flatmates and friends to the very helpful Göttingen University’s staff as well as my professors and tutors.
