The IRTG 1816 is a unique collaborative research initiative with partner sites in Germany and UK funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and the British Heart Foundation, respectively.
Nationwide the IRTG 1816 is the only DFG funded collaborative international PhD programme between a partner site in Germany and UK. The mission of the IRTG 1816 is to offer excellent doctoral researchers the opportunity to perform their doctoral work in a cutting edge topic within the field of cardiovascular science embraced by a structured training programme. For this the University Medical Centre Göttingen and the King’s College London had joint forces and established a common research programme on “Phosphorylation and redox-dependent signalling mechanisms in the failing heart”, had set up a diversified but tailor-made educational programme as well as an effective management structure.
A milestone which reflects the successful work of the management board of the IRTG 1816 and the overall achievement of this research initiative is the establishment of a joint PhD degree.
The viva exams (PhD defense) of the first joint PhD students took place end of September. Successful candidates obtained a University of Göttingen – Kings College London joint PhD degree. Congratulations! In total there will be 5 joint PhD degree exams in 2016.
