Establishment of the German-Colombian Peace Institute
On 31 August 2016, the University of Göttingen received the official approval of the DAAD for the establishment of the German-Colombian Peace Institute. The Peace Institute is a joint project between consortia of German and Colombian Universities. The German consortium is formed by the Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, the University of Göttingen, the Lateinamerika Institut – Freie Universität Berlin, and the Hessische Stiftung für Friedens- und Konfliktforschung (Peace Research Institute Frankfurt).
The Peace Institute will support the peace process in Colombia in the form of a research and study institution which will develop and share expertise in questions related to peace research, cultures of remembrance, coping with the past, conflict prevention, and configuration of a post-conflict society.
Prof. Dr. Kai Ambos represents the University of Göttingen in the consortium. The Colombian partner universities are grouped within the „University Peace Alliance“ based in the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogota. Furthermore, the Peace Institute will also work closely and intensively with regional Colombian universities, especially those located in the areas affected by the armed conflict.
The German-Colombian Institute is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office over the period of 10 years.
